Fibromyalgia

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain, tenderness, and fatigue in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Other symptoms can include trouble sleeping, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and depression. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but treatment can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

What is the treatment for fibromyalgia?

  • Exercise: Regular physical activity, such as low-impact aerobics, stretching, and strength training, can help relieve fibromyalgia pain and improve physical function.
  • Physiotherapy: A physical therapist can help design a program that addresses your specific needs and abilities. In our clinic we also offer hydrotherapy treatment that has been proved to be beneficial in treatment of fibromyalgia symptoms

  • Counselling: Cognitive-behavioural therapy, stress management techniques, and other forms of counselling can help people with fibromyalgia cope with the emotional impact of the condition.

  • Medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anticonvulsants, and antidepressants are commonly used to treat fibromyalgia.
  • Complementary therapies: Massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments can provide relief for some people with fibromyalgia.

It's important to work with a doctor to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses your specific symptoms and needs.
